A Guide to Carbon Projects For Conservancies
2025
The guide is designed to help conservancies navigate the complex and rapidly evolving carbon sector by providing clear information on its risks, opportunities, and processes, particularly within the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM). Focused on Kenya’s terrestrial conservancies, it supports members, managers, boards, NGOs, and stakeholders in assessing whether and how to develop carbon projects that deliver equitable social, ecological, and financial benefits. It was developed by the Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Association (KWCA), with technical support from Sustain East Africa, in response to growing interest among conservancies in carbon-based revenue opportunities, and is informed by research, expert insights, and extensive engagement with conservancy managers.

25 SEPTEMBER 2025
Drawing on recent research across Tanzania, Bangladesh, and Mozambique, the session explored what truly needed to be measured, how to strengthen accountability without adding bureaucracy, and what kinds of support and timeframes made funding more effective on the ground.
Participants heard from a peer funder experimenting with new approaches, joined focused discussions on practical solutions, and contributed to co-designing principles for smarter, outcomes-oriented grant making. The roundtable was designed as an open, candid space for funders seeking to work differently and collectively unlock more trusted, high-impact models of support.
